Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration representatives defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this document release grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are entirely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet some do not, including prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña said in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. So they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the right was relatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for action that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided hard-copy binders of files that included no new information.
